Concepts of Europe in the nationalist and conservative right in postwar Germany and France

Research groups - Democracy and statehood
Start of project: April 2021

The project investigates the development of nationalist and conservative-right-wing concepts of Europe in Germany and France between 1945 and the 1980s. These concepts will be related to the politics of European integration, and their influence on these politcs will be evaluated. The investigation will be approached through several thematic constellations, such as the negotiations over the European Defense Community and the German contribution to Western defense, the projections of cultural unity in the "Christian Occident," and the (neo-)imperial plans for a unified "Eurafrica." The goal is to enrich the historiography of European integration by interrogating the right's alleged position as marginal and as driven by fundamental opposition.
